handwashing_2

Who would have thought?

Frequent proper hand washing is still one of the best ways to avoid getting the Flu and other infectious diseases.

Thorough washing with soap and water for at least 20 seconds (as long as it takes to hum the "Happy Birthday" song twice) is very effective in reducing germs.

If soap and water aren't available you can use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer, but they are not as effective.

Study shows that many stroke patients do not get treatment soon enough

According to a study of patients who had strokes in the period of 2005 to 2010,  almost 44 percent didn't get to the hospital until more than 4.5 hours after the time they were known to first show symptoms.  An injection to dissolve the clots that cause a stroke and prevent further damage is available, but needs to be used as soon as possible for best results.

flying dog and catSpaying And Neutering

There are many health advantages to spaying and neutering dogs and cats before they mature.  In addition, there are quality of life advantages for both you and your pets.  "Spaying" is the term for surgical sterilization of a female pet (removal of the ovaries and uterus) and "neutering" (removal of the testicles) is the common term used for a male pet.  Besides the obvious benefit of preventing unwanted puppies or kittens, spaying a female dog before her first heat period (usually at around 6 months of age) has been shown to prevent the development of breast cancer later in her life.  It also eliminates the risk of a life threatening infection of the uterus in older intact female dogs. In male dogs and cats, neutering helps prevent roaming behavior as well as urine marking of their territory (it's your territory too!).  To learn more about the benefits of spaying and neutering go to AVMA/spayingandneutering
